How to measure your windows

For windows (inside mount)

Measuring does not have to be done by a professional installer. The technique shown here is the same one that our installers use for our local customers.   Be sure and check the specifications for the particular blind or shade you are considering to be sure you have enough window depth for an inside mount.

Important: Only use a metal tape measure! Don't use a cloth tape

  1. measure across the window opening from edge to edge at the top, the middle, then the bottom
  2. take the smallest measurement and record that as your "width"
  3. measure from top to bottom on the left side and the right side
  4. take the biggest measurement and record that as "Height"

IMPORTANT NOTE:The factory will automatically deduct approximately 1/4" from either side of inside mount blinds to keep the blind from rubbing the sides of the window opening.

For windows or doors (outside mount)

Measuring for doors or an outside mount for windows is a little different. Since the blind will not fit inside the window frame, you have the freedom of deciding how wide and how long you want it. Typically, a few inches wider than the window is fine for the width or the overall width of the trim if covering it. The headrail ocupies about 2-1/4" of space and the bottom rail with holddowns occupies about 1" so add 3-1/4" to the length for an exact fit. Also, make sure that the blind will not interfere with the door handle. All of our blinds come with a wood valance and hold down brackets so the blind will not bounce off the door when you open and close it.  If you have a raised molding around the glass on your door, include spacers in your order also.

Measuring For Honeycomb Shades

Measuring for shades is similar to measuring for blinds, as detailed above.  For inside mounts, take several measurements and use the smallest, just like for blinds.  A minimum 1" recess is required to inside mount honeycomb shades.  For outside mounts, overlap the window opening at least 2" for good coverage or line up with the trim molding, if any.  If mounting above the molding on the wall, be sure and request extension brackets.

For matching arches, the height should be half the width.
